Štipka histórie a súčasnosti

Levíček je staré plemeno, jeho podobizeň sa objavila už v staroveku, ale najmä na renesančných maľbách a sochách. Bol spoločníkom dvorných dám, ale aj strážcom, lovcom hlodavcov a "ohrievačom postelí". S úpadkom šľachty bolo plemeno takmer vyhubené a v 60-tych rokoch minulého storočia bolo uvedené v Guinnesovej knihe rekordov ako najvzácnejšie psie plemeno na svete. Našťastie koncom 19. storočia sa podujala Madame Bennert zachrániť toto nesporne zaujímavé plemeno pred úplným zánikom. Vďaka tomu sa postupne v 20. storočí počet levíčkov zvyšoval.

V súčasnosti sa najviac levíčkov chová v Spojenom kráľovstve, v USA, v Austrálii a v Európe dominujú v chove škandinávske krajiny Fínsko, Dánsko, Švédsko a Nórsko.

Na Slovensku je levíček málo známym a chovaným plemenom. Odborne na Slovensku chov zastrešuje Bichon klub Slovensko.

A pinch of history and the present

The Little Lion Dog is an old breed; its image appeared already in antiquity, but especially in Renaissance paintings and sculptures. It was a companion of ladies of the court, but also a guardian, a rodent hunter and a 'bed warmer'. With the decline of the nobility, the breed was almost wiped out and in the 1960s it was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the rarest dog breed in the world. Fortunately, at the end of the 19th century, Madame Bennert took it upon herself to save this undeniably interesting breed from complete extinction. As a result, the number of Little Lion Dogs gradually increased in the 20th century.

Today, the largest numbers of Little Lion Dogs are bred in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia, while in Europe the Scandinavian countries of Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway dominate the breeding of Little Lion Dogs.

In Slovakia, the Little Lion Dog is a little known and bred breed. Professionally in Slovakia the breeding is represented by the Bichon Club Slovakia.

Prečo práve levíček?

Lebo je to malý rodinný psík vhodný do bytu aj do domu. Je veľmi naviazaný na svoju rodinnú svorku, je veselý, milý, hravý, učenlivý, inteligentný so zmyslom pre humor. Výchova levíčka nie je zložitá, ale treba s ňou začať od šteňacieho veku. Rýchlo sa učí a má dobrú pamäť, preto je vhodný aj na rôzne psie športy primerané jeho veľkosti. Navyše je nesmierne rýchly a obratný, pretože má dlhšie končatiny.

Ak však niekto očakáva, že levíček sa bude správať chúlostivo, či doslova ako šľachtic, bude sklamaný. Levíček je pes a správa sa ako pes. Vyváľa sa v piesku, v pokosenej tráve, skočí do kaluže, rád si zapláva, zašteká a hoci nemá výrazný lovecký pud, na hlodavce reaguje s extrémnym záujmom. Má priemernú potrebu pohybu, ale miluje aj dlhé vychádzky v prírode, výlety na nové miesta, či hry na záhrade a "záhradkárčenie". Na druhej strane sa rád vyvaľuje doma na gauči, alebo v posteli, je prítulný a rád zohrieva členov svojej rodiny. Vie byť aktívny, ale aj veľmi pokojný. Je prispôsobivý a po adekvátnom tréningu dokáže zostať doma aj sám, ale samota mu nepristane, preto je vždy lepšie mať viac ako jedného levíčka. Jednoducho je to pes do voza aj do koča.

Vo všeobecnosti je to plemeno bez závažných zdravotných problémov. Samozrejmosťou je kvalitná domáca a veterinárna starostlivosť. Dožíva sa 13 – 15 rokov a niekedy aj viac.

Why a Little Lion Dog?

Because it is a small family dog suitable for the apartment and the house. It is very attached to its family pack; it is cheerful, sweet, playful, teachable, and intelligent with a sense of humour. Raising the Little Lion Dog is not difficult, but you need to start with it from puppy age. It is a quick learner and has a good memory, so it is also suitable for various dog sports appropriate to its size. In addition, it is extremely fast and agile because of its longer limbs.

However, if anyone expects the Little Lion Dog to behave in a tricky manner or literally like a nobleman, they will be disappointed. The Little Lion Dog is a dog and behaves like a dog. It rolls in the sand, rolls in grass clippings, jumps into puddles, likes to swim, barks, and although it has no pronounced hunting instinct, it responds to rodents with extreme interest. It has an average need of exercise, but also loves long walks in the countryside, trips to new places, or playing in the garden and 'gardening'. On the other hand, it likes to lounge around at home on the couch or in bed; it is affectionate and likes to warm up its family members. It can be active but also very calm. It is adaptable and can stay at home alone after adequate training, but solitude does not like, so it is always better to have more than one Little Lion Dog.

In general, it is a breed without serious health problems. Of course, good home and veterinary care is necessary. Its lifespan is 13 - 15 years and sometimes more.

Hodvábny kožúšok a ďalšie drobnosti

Levíček má dlhú, hodvábnu srsť bez podsady. Hoci sa často uvádza, že nepĺzne, je potrebné spresnenie. Je pravda, že chlpy z levíčka nepadajú, ale zostávajú v kožúšku. Takže pravidelné česanie špeciálnymi kefami a hrebeňmi na hodvábnu srsť je nevyhnutné, aby srsť nesplstnatela. Rovnako je dôležité pravidelné kúpanie s použitím kvalitnej kozmetiky pre dlhú, hodvábnu psiu srsť.

Ušnice sú dlhé, preto je potrebné pravidelné čistenie ako prevencia ušných ochorení. O zuby sa treba taktiež pravidelne starať, odstraňovať zubný povlak včas, kým nevznikne zubný kameň, ktorý môže spôsobiť zápaly až nutnosť extrakcie zubov. Pazúriky sa nie vždy prirodzene obrusujú, keďže levíček je ľahké plemeno, takže súčasťou starostlivosti je aj skracovanie pazúrikov.

Štandardný leví strih sa možno niekomu nepozdáva, ale je povinný v prípade záujmu o účasť na výstavách a z hygienického hľadiska je veľmi praktický. Navyše tento strih dodáva plemenu jedinečný vzhľad. Kto však neplánuje chodiť so psíkom na výstavy a nemá trpezlivosť a čas psíka pravidelne česať a kúpať, môže zvoliť pre svojho levíčka iný praktický strih.

Na všetky úkony spojené so starostlivosťou je potrebné psíka privykať od šteniatka.

Silky fur and other little things

The Little Lion Dog has a long, silky coat with no undercoat. Although it is often stated that it does not shed, clarification is needed. It is true that the hairs do not fall from the Little Lion Dog, but remain in the fur. So regular brushing with special brushes and combs for silky coats are essential to keep the coat from shedding. Regular bathing using quality cosmetics is also important for a long, silky dog coat.

The ears are long, so regular cleaning is necessary as a prevention of ear disease. Teeth should also be cared for regularly, removing plaque early before tartar builds up which can cause inflammation and even the need for tooth extraction. The claws do not always wear down naturally as the Little Lion Dog is a light breed, so part of the care involves trimming the claws.

The standard lion haircut may not appeal to some, but it is compulsory if interested in entering shows and is very practical from a hygiene point of view. In addition, this cut gives the breed a unique look. However, those who do not plan to take their dog to dog shows and do not have the patience and time to brush and bathe their dog regularly, can choose another practical cut for their Little Lion Dog.

It is necessary to accustom the dog to all care tasks from the puppy.
